Currently a majority of Arkansas and Missouri slaughter goats and sheep are sold at livestock auctions and are shipped out of the area for slaughter. Both goats and sheep are sold at these sales because buyers prefer to have both available. Goats and sheep can be easily handled and hauled together. 

San Angelo, Texas, and New Holland, Pennsylvania, are the two largest goat and sheep Auctions in the United State. These two markets set the price trends for the rest of the country. The Oregon County Buying Station at Koshkonong, Missouri, is the only USDA graded goat and sheep market in Missouri or Arkansas. Animals are brought between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the last Saturday of each month, and unloaded at the ranch show barn. The animals are sorted by grade and kind by a USDA grader, and sent onto the scale. After being weighed, the producer or seller is paid immediately. The prices being paid each month are usually posted on the web page the Friday prior to the sale, http://www.bubranch.com/Oregon_Buy_Station.html. There is a $4.00 fee per animal that is sold. All animals are fed, watered and treated well until they are loaded for departure. 

Many livestock auctions accept goats and sheep as part of their regular cattle sales, but low volumes of goats and sheep lead to a poor turnout of goat and sheep buyers and low or irregular prices for the farmer.  More and more livestock auctions are starting to set up special monthly goat and sheep sales. These sales have larger numbers of goats and sheep and thus, attract more buyers leading to higher prices.
